Fluid - The beginning

Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less, by Marie Curie. 

Understanding... It was the constant look at the world around us (personal and organizational), namely the fast pace of change and the ever-increasing complexity of transformations, which led us to start this journey.

Then, the pandemic context made us even more aware of this changing reality. How our teams, business partners, and ourselves are reacting to it. Our feelings, fears and challenges.

But how can the leaders of organizations adapt their management practices to remain competitive in the current context? A context that is best characterized by the acronym BANI (which emerged last year) as being Brittle, Anxious, Non-Linear, and Incomprehensible (replacing VUCA, in use since the 80’s).

To respond to this challenge, we created Fluid. Fluid helps our clients thrive in their complex transformations and reap their intended business value. But… why did we choose the name Fluid?

As John F. Kennedy once stated – and the last two years have taught us – "There is nothing more certain and unchanging than uncertainty and change”. So, when our reality changes, we must be able to adapt to it, while remaining united. Rivers flow united to the oceans, not colliding against the obstacles ahead, but adapting to find the path of least resistance to overcome them. We must adapt to our reality the same way. Like a Fluid.  

We believe that we can only navigate uncertainty and change with a fluid approach. An approach that covers how information is shared inside organizations, how people interact and how decision-making processes occur. These processes have to adapt to the logic of delivering different transformation projects that are interconnected and interdependent. This is only possible if organizations evolve from a conflict to a collaborative environment. Genuine collaboration is the key to achieve the agility necessary to respond to highly complex contexts and create value.

Fluid is a program that aims to guide the leaders of organizations on this journey towards collaboration. A journey that requires the implementation of a management discipline, supported by three components: Infostructure, Standard Operating Processes and Upgraded Leadership

First, the use of an Infostructure allows the centralized, updated, and transparent management and distribution of the information. Then, the implementation of Standard Operating Processes consists of a new way of working that will enable organizations to create a reference for everyone to be autonomous in operations, through different normalized procedures. Finally, the development of an Upgraded Leadership capability will allow Leaders to create new thinking models and behaviors to deal with complexity and change in a sustained way.
